What are the differences between spot and contract freight rates?
Spot rates are negotiated on a per‑shipment basis, often days before pickup. They fluctuate based on near‑term supply and demand. Contract rates are part of multi‑month or annual agreements between shippers and carriers and tend to be more stable. In tight markets, spot rates often rise above contract rates; when capacity loosens, spot rates may fall below contract rates.
