What are the critical questions answered in the paper? 1. Where do N.A. manufacturers fit in the vehicle and parts-component sourcing equations for both these markets? 2. What will be the impact on capacity in N.A. and China as a result of adding to Chinese manufacturing capacity? 3. And will today's Chinese partners be tomorrow's competitors in either or both markets?
Why was the China Truck Industry White Paper prepared? There has been growing evidence of more and more parts and components being sourced from China by N.A. commercial vehicle manufacturers and first and second tier manufacturers. Does this mean that these items are replacing existing N.A. supply, or serving to add to existing capacity needs? Are the same parts being sold into the Chinese market and if yes, are the design, quality, and price the same? It appears that the commercial vehicle industry is coming full circle, a sort of circle of life phenomenon. Many supply questions like these were addressed in the survey and supporting research.
What insights into the N.A. commercial vehicle industry were identified? A total of 60 N.A. companies participated in a lengthy survey of why they were or were not operating in China. Some of the respondents even said they had no future Chinese plans. An overall objective was to define where companies are today relative to their China-N.A. operations and then attempt to understand where future plans may take them in these two very large CV markets. We believe the study was successful in providing real insights about today and likely future actions.
Users: The principal users of the China white paper will be those in or supporting top management who are charged with making product sourcing and manufacturing location decisions for tomorrow’s markets. Commercial vehicle competition is becoming more global, which in turn is putting more and more pressure on product costs and quality. China is a major alternative manufacturing location that concurrently has a very large, growing commercial vehicle market, especially at the heavy end. Is it possible to be a CV supplier and ignore China domestic and export (to N.A.) market opportunities and still be competitive long term in North America and other global markets? And could today's Chinese suppliers and partners be tomorrow’s competitors? Stay tuned. Hopefully, the China Truck Industry White Paper provides each user with insights not previously understood, and at a very low cost.
